Infection Control: Spanish Influenza of 1918
In this lesson we will discuss the Great Pandemic of 1918 and its effect on human survival, particularly in the US. Students will be able to identity what a pandemic is and how the Spanish Influenza impacted the Nation's health. Students will also learn what caused the influenza and how it was stopped in order to prolong the survival of millions.

Activity 1
Watch video by Mark Honigsbaum. Consider these questions: What is a Pandemic? Which Pandemic was the worst? How did it spread?
Activity 2
1. Read Primary Sources on the influenza pandemic of 1918 (first 3 articles)
2. Take a look at the images and political cartoons. What can you learn from these images? Consider the symbols you see.

2. Group Discussion: Team up into groups of 3-5.
Pick a political cartoon. Identify the objects and people you see in the cartoon? What is the primary focus of the cartoon? What are the themes? What are the symbols? What does this cartoon represent? Discuss.
Based on what you have viewed and read, list at least 8 ways Americans tried to treat, prevent and/or lessen the spread influenza around the nation on poster on http://edu.glogster.com/ and share it with the class.
