Survival of the Fittest
Objectives
In this lesson, you will be learning what resources all living things need in order to survive. You'll explore features of animals in different habitats and research how structural and behavioral adaptations aid an animal in its continued survival.

Consider what you already know about animals in the wild. Discuss the following questions with a partner:
- What do all living things need to survive?
- What happens when there are not enough resources for all of the organisms in an environment?
- How do organisms get the resources they need?
Click HERE to see a short passage on the 4 necessities of all living organisms. Were your initial thoughts accurate?
Part 2 : Structural and Behavioral Adaptations
What are adaptations and how do they contribute to survival?
Watch the Study Jams video to find out. Pay attention to important vocabulary as you watch. This will come in handy later!
Quick Quiz: How well do you understand structural and behavioral adaptations. Take the quiz to find out. If you didn't get all 7 questions correct, try it again!
Exploring Biomes:
Life on Earth is extremely diverse. Animals in different types of habitats have different features for survival. Explore the biomes shown HERE. What are the advantages and disadvantages for animals living in each biome? What type of adaptations do these animals have to help them survive in the environment? The Marine Biome: Use THIS interactive activity to explore a marine mammal. What structural adaptations help it to survive in its environment? What behavioral adaptations help it survive? |
Self-assessment: Can you classify each animal adaptation as structural or behavioral?
Try the color sort activity to find out!

When you've finished, check your work here! How did you do?

Part 3 : Research Project
It's time to use what you've learned! In this project, you will pick an animal and research the structural and behavioral adaptations that help this animal survive in its biome. Some ways that you can choose to present your information include: a brochure, a slideshow, a magazine article, a nature documentary style video, etc. Make sure to closely follow the rubric!

What factors affect human survival?
You now understand the resources animals need in order to survive and how their physical and behavioral features aid in their continued survival.
Next, you will learn about skills and attributes humans need to survive.
